Today's Tip: Attend Minor Pro Sporting Events
Yesterday's tip got me to thinking. In 2006, the USA Today reported that the average price
of tickets for an NFL game rose to $62. In 2007, ESPN reported that the average price of
a Major League Baseball ticket was $23.
As hockey and basketball statistics are not so readily available, I figured I'd use football and
baseball as our sample. Consider that these prices are "averages." There are some NFL
tickets that go for as much as $500 a game, and some baseball tickets that go as much as
$400. But thinking back on my weekend, I attended a minor league hockey game, and each
of my tickets were less than a mere $10.
When you think about it, there is a lot more passion in minor league sports. After all, each
of the participants is working hard to make it to the professional level. When you're
watching a major league sport, sometimes you have to deal with complacent players who
know that they're getting paid big bucks (and no whammies!) regardless of the outcome of
the game.
Minor league sports also really aren't that big of a step down from the pros. Sure, you're
not going to find a Walter Payton or a Michael Jordan playing in the minors, but you're still
going to get primarily the same product. If it's football, you're still watching people try to
score touchdowns. If it's hockey, you still get to see fast action and hopefully a lot of
goals.
Here's another nice thought to consider. Since far fewer people attend a minor league
event, that just opens up that much more space while you're at the game. At the minor
league hockey game I went to, the 16,000 seat capacity arena that night had just over 2,000
fans. That gives you a lot of room to spread out and enjoy the game! Plus, your ticket
(that you bought for a lower price) gets you to a better seat than the professional
counterpart! If you are attending a baseball or basketball game, you'll be able to hear the
chatter of the players.
I don't know about you, but for me there are a multitude of reasons to "go minor" when it
comes to sports! If you live in a city with a minor league sports team, why not get out to a
game? If you're one of the people that doesn't live in a city with a minor-pro team, chances
are that there is a college or university close by. I can't think of universities that don't have
a sports program. Check out and support the local student athletes. You know, the ones
that not only are working hard on the court, but the ones working hard OFF the court as
well? I'll bet they'll give you something to cheer about!
One last thing: don't forget to bring your own food to the game!
