Today's Tip:  Use Online Coupons

In today’s day and age, long lines at retailers in the days leading up to Christmas should
really be a thing of the past.  Nevertheless, every year, no matter what mall you visit, you’ll
you should stop your mall madness once and for all.

If you get the Sunday paper, you probably are aware of its inherent value just from the
coupons.  Many people don’t realize that there are also coupons available to them online at
the same retailers.  If you go to checkout, most online shopping carts have an area that
simply says “coupon code.”  Did you realize that you can conduct a search on any search
engine and just type your stores name in and coupon code (e.g.  “Best Buy” “coupon
code”), and many websites will display the online specials of the month?  Most coupon
codes save the consumer between 15-20% on their purchase.

Secondly, most retailers do not charge you sales tax if you reside in a state outside of their
shipping office.  On larger ticket items, saving the tax alone is worth shopping from the
comfort of your home.

Third, and to me this is most important, people always have a tough time putting a price on
intangible items.  Not me.  I put a very high price on my own time.  When you are
shopping and waiting in line and losing the Christmas spirit from some of the more
aggressive shoppers, time is an added expense to your overall purchase.  Let alone the
commute time there and back and the gas expense.  Oh, and don’t forget about not having
to stand in line at the post office!

Finally, many retailers use free shipping as a way to get you to purchase through their
website.  It is very common these days to be able to insert a coupon code, receive free
shipping, and save the tax on the same purchase.  This can end up saving you over 20% on
your purchase, and the item will be shipped directly to you or the person you have it
shipped to.  Then, with all of your leftover Christmas cheer, you can bring a special dish
over to share with the family on Christmas Day!
